We have a brand new trailer for Spies in Disguise. This animated movie was originally produced by 20th Century Fox but, thanks to the recent merger, is now technically going to be a Disney release later this year. They’ve got some major star power in the form of Will Smith, who is just coming off of his biggest hit ever with Aladdin, and Tom Holland, who is back as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home this week. Based on this new trailer, it looks like this is going to be a winning combination, assuming the movie around them can all come together in an equally satisfying way.
The trailer kicks off by firmly setting up that Will Smith’s character, much like James Bond or Ethan Hunt, in his circles, is about as good as they come. He pulls off some amazing, seemingly impossible spy business. All seems well. We’re then introduced to the Tom Holland character, who is a bumbling science expert, sort of like a member of Q branch from the James Bond movies, but less put together and a little more bumbly. He promises that he’s come up with a way to make people invisible for missions. In a way, that’s true, but that’s when things stake a bit of an interesting turn as Smith’s super spy is turned into a pigeon.
Much like the first Spies in Disguise teaser that was released for this movie back in November of last year, they’re not diving too much into the plot beyond the pigeon thing. Overall, the big takeaway here is that both of the movie’s stars, even though it’s just them lending their voices to an animated movie, are charismatic as ever. These are two very different, yet equally likable Hollywood personalities, who are arguably operating at max capacity.
Spies In Disguise centers on super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland). The two couldn’t be more opposite. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is everything but. However, when things take an unexpected turn, the two unlikely allies are forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will call for an impossible and inconceivable disguise; transforming Lance into the brave, fierce and majestic pigeon. Walter and Lance must work as a team to save the world.
The rest of the cast includes Ben Mendelsohn (Captain Marvel), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Rashida Jones (Angie Tribeca), DJ Khaled (Bad Boys for Life) and Masi Oka (Heroes). Troy Quane and Nick Bruno co-direct. This serves as their feature directorial debut. Even though this wasn’t made by Disney, it does feel like the kind of thing that they can effectively sell, assuming the final product is good. Spies In Disguise is set to arrive in theaters Christmas 2019. Be sure to check out the new trailer from the 20th Century Fox YouTube channel for yourself.
